Just a few years after launch, 5G has become the default network in most Indian cities and towns, and the conversation has already moved to what comes next.
The current picture
Average mobile speeds have multiplied since the 4G era, and unlimited 5G plans are now standard with most operators. Video calls, cloud gaming and UPI-everything all lean on this invisible upgrade.
What 5G changed quietly
- Work from anywhere: hotspot speeds good enough for full office work from small towns.
- Smart devices: from delivery tracking to farm sensors, cheap connectivity made IoT practical.
- Streaming quality: 4K streaming on mobile is now routine, not a luxury.
6G: hype vs reality
Research labs in India, Japan, Korea and Europe are testing 6G concepts targeting the 2030 timeframe. Expect years of buzzwords before real rollout — but the groundwork (spectrum policy, fiber backhaul) is being laid now.
Bottom line: you do not need to chase 6G headlines yet. A good 5G plan and decent router cover everything a normal user needs in 2026.
